Good post, But I am being driven crazy with rails developers in India,
There are so many of them (with 4 yrs of degree + 2-3 years of experience) but cant demonstrate any impressive ruby/rails skills? How do you find productive developers?

Damn, every time I ask an Indian Developer , How does your work day look like or how much do you actually work in a day. Most of them reply to me saying they work 10 - 13 hrs a day and its all their coding time. I have never seen any good developer being able to spend more than 6hrs a day, because software craft is a creative job that exhaust your energies soon.

Why would I want to hire people who are stressed out to the hell?.

Hi coming2india,

Thanks for the comments. Yes, its difficult to find good developers especially when there are lot of there. Also, there are some coding factories that just focus on number of hours and assembly line process not realizing other aspects of working with real people and software development.

In my personal experience, spending 10 hours in office doesn't mean coding all the time. There are blogs, twitter, ruby IRC, knowledge sharing sessions and a lot of things that good developers spend time during their working hours. Its impossible to survive in software development if you are not a life long learner, taking adequate breaks and sharpening your skills.

One question we usually ask during interviews is , what was the last fun project you do ? or Are you involved in some open source project ? what is your favorite blog ? This really helps us to filter people who are just "code producers" with somebody "passionate about self development and good code".

Unfortunately, there are some coding factories here but you will find a very high rate of attrition in these companies. Good developers are always looking for fun working environment which understands their need as a developer, learner and a human being.
